FAQ

How is the course and curriculum structured?
The course runs from September to September (including some weeks in the summer holidays) in line with the Bucks term dates. If you decide to go ahead I will send a full list of dates when you book.
We cover all aspects of the 11 Plus, including Maths, English, Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning. I complete a topic per term (for example, in January my students will study shapes in Maths and Writers' Techniques in English). I plan and deliver all lessons myself, making sure that I draw on tried and trusted sources such as CGP and Schofield and Sims.
I have a background in delivering excellent exam results so exam technique is also a big focus of mine. I explicitly teach methods such as box breathing and time management throughout the course.
Students in my classes will be assessed on a regular basis in order to ready them for a real thing. I will mark these assessments and produce a written termly report explaining your child's strengths and areas for development.

Who can join your classes? Do you have entry requirements?
In short, any Year 4 or Year 5 student can join one of my classes. I do not select students on the basis of prior academic attainment because I believe that every family and every child has the ability to decide for themselves if they would like to enter for the 11 Plus.
Over the last decade I have tutored and taught students with a vast range of abilities, including those with SEND and those who are More Able and Talented, and believe in a culture of inclusion. The classes will be kept small, which will enable me to focus on individuals and cater for a range of abilities. I do, however, reserve the right to ask any child who is disruptive to leave my classes in order to ensure the learning environment remains focussed.

How much do your classes cost and how can I sign up?
Classes are £19.50 per lesson and fees are payable by balance transfer a term in advance. These fees are inclusive of all resources, including up to 6 CGP textbooks which your child will use throughout the year. If you would like to sign up for a class I will need to take a non-refundable deposit of £35 which covers the cost of the textbooks and the deposit for the hall hire. This sum will be taken off your first bill. If you decide to sign up I will send you a more detailed list of my t's & c's so we both know exactly where we stand.

Which is better: one-to-one tuition or group tuition?
Like everything, there are pros and cons of both. One-to-one tutoring can work very well, especially when trying to improve a child's attainment. Having said that, when it comes to preparing for the 11 Plus attainment may not need to be the main focus. Instead, familiarisation with different question types, a wide vocabulary and exam technique are what counts and there are many benefits to undertaking this work in groups. For example, not only will students be able to learn from each other, but the lessons will be structured to be highly engaging and interactive making the most of opportunities for paired and group work.

Do you offer private tuition?
Yes, I do, but my evenings and weekends are fully booked for 2024 / 2025. I do have spaces during the school day (either online or in person) and also put on some ad hoc dates during the school holidays. Private tuition costs upwards of £40 per hour, depending on the content of the session and how far I would need to travel. Please drop me an email for more information.

Can you tell me a little about your background?
Of course! I began my teaching career in 2010 after gaining my PGCE from UCL's Institute of Education. I taught in London before taking up a post at Chesham Grammar School where I was the Lead Teacher for the More Able and Talented before becoming Subject Leader for Politics. After my second child was born I decided that I would like to work more flexibly whilst my children are little and began tutoring. I have also been 'keeping my hand in' with exam marking (for which I am now a Senior Examiner), supply teaching and by taking a number of courses (I have recently completed Level 2 Diplomas in Understanding Children and Young People's Mental Health, Behaviour That Challenges and Understanding Distressed Behaviour in Children). I set up group tuition due to the high level of demand I encountered and am very much enjoying delivering my classes.
